Het Braziliaanse transgender model, Valentina Sampaio, siert voor het allereerst de cover van Vogue Paris. En dit is niet zonder reden bijzonder, het blad is het eerste ‘Franse’ magazine met een transgender model op de cover. Maandag maakte Vogue Paris met een Instagrampost bekend dat ze trots zijn op het feit dat een transgender model -voor het allereerst- op de cover staat van de Franse modebijbel. Valentina Sampaio siert namelijk het maart issue. “This month we are proud to celebrate transgender beauty and how models like Valentina Sampaio, who is posing for her first ever Vogue cover, are changing the face of fashion and deconstructing prejudice,” aldus de caption onder de foto. In 1980 stond model Naomi Campbell voor het eerst als African-American op de cover van Vogue en werd al snel opgevolgd door model Andre J. Deze keer was de Braziliaanse Valentina Sampaio aan de beurt om geschiedenis te schrijven. Dit is niet alleen een positieve vooruitgang voor Valentina zelf, maar ook voor veel andere transgenders. “This cover is about the importance of those rights, and that we still need to make progress on an awful lot of stuff,” vertelt de hoofdredacteur van het blad aan Vogue America.
